The Velocity of Autumn, May 14-24, 2026

This was a wonderfully written play that brought many emotional highs and lows to the Charlotte Players audiences. Rick and I had seen it performed at the Ocala Civic Playehouse several years before. We loved the play and wanted to bring it here to our audiences.

Alexandra is an 80-year-old artist in a showdown with her children, Jennifer and Michael, over her need for assisted living. She has barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone surrounded by enough Molotov Cocktails to take out the whole block, and is vowing to do so!

But, Jennifer and Michael, have a secret weapon – their brother, Christopher, who has been estranged from the family for 20 years, and who, like his mother, is an artist. He comes to help.

Alexandra was played by Barbara Hankins and Chris by Bill Olson. Both gave outstanding performances.

Audiences were treated to Chris and Alexandra exploring the rapid pace of life in its later years. The story is told with compassion and humor. It is a journey that begins with confrontation and moves through many emotional highs and lows, to finally the reigniting of a loving relationship.

She and Chris leave by the previously barricaded front door without the need of the Molotov Cocktails!

Here is a collection of shots taken during dress rehearsal.

Bill lives on the East Coast of Florida in Fort Lauderdale and came across to the west to perform for us. Excitingly, we have all agreed to take the show over there in November for Bill’s local group – taking it on tour as you might say.
